the baby brigade

new-found love lost
and precious bravery won.
a noble sacrifice given
to save our daughters and sons.

we slowly sank
aboard the Titanic.
children clung to their mothers,
the crew in a panic.

will we remember
anything of that day?
it changed everyone’s lives
and changed some men’s names.

from that criminal hoping for a better life
and the young sailor boy,
to the man helping his brand-new wife
and the old man with his family destroyed.

forming a line on the steps of the stairs
standing there arm in arm,
the woman smiled through her tears
seeing her daughter safe from harm.

that fatal Titanic did not hurt our soul,
I have faith in humanity’s kindness.
waiting in line silently crying,
I saw the baby brigade.
